Generative Design- Similarities with Nature

To set up a model in Fusion 360, preserve (green) and obstacle bodies (red) are required to instruct the algorithm where material must and cannot exist, shown by the animation above.

The human body has evolved over millions of years and some of the strongest structures in today’s society mimic this evolutionary success. From the animation above, similarities can be seen with human bone topology.

Biomimicry (imitation of the living) design aims to take inspiration from the success of natural selection. It is no surprise that AI and optimisation algorithms produce results that mimic nature, as the iterative process can be considered akin to a sped-up evolutionary process of natural selection. Instead of occurring over millions of years, the computing power available today allows for this process to be completed in a number of hours.

This relatively new and widely available technology opens up the possibility for a number of improvements in structural design, architecture and much more we are yet to discover.
